Benjamin Graham - The Intelligent Investor
The Intelligent Investor by Benjamin Graham
My rating: 1 of 5 stars
This book is so old.
At first I didn’t realise how old it is, because I bought the book in a bookstore on a whim, but just so you know - the book was last updated by Graham in 1972 and this version has commentary by Jason Zweig that was written in 2003.
At the time of writing this, it’s been 21 years of no updates. So the book does not take in the fact that:
- You are able to trade without commissions from your phone.
- You can trade using algorithms.
- You won’t know most of the companies’ names, because they went bankrupt already.
- I believe there are better ways to price investments since then.
My other gripes with the book are:
- It’s really long and slow to read.
- Graham’s style of english (old english).
So all in all, while the book did not change, the market did change, and it did a lot. If you’re thinking about picking this book up, I’d suggest going for a newer book. I’m sure there could be some book that’s 300 pages shorter, teaches you all the same principles, and there isn’t such a desparity between technologies of today and back then.
Alternatively you can search for the main points from the book and save time and money.
